In SharePoint 2007 after the release of Service Pack 1, auto start workflows would not start using SPLitsItem.Update() or SPListItem.SystemUpdate() due some restrictions that came into effect. SharePoint 2010 also seems to have the same restriction. Recently creating a sample web part I found
