It is an excellent article, or "reference post" as Andrew puts it that provides information about Managed Metadata in relation to taxonomies.

The components required to use the Managed Metadata Service are described as well as information about using the Managed Metadata Service in lists and libraries to enhance taxonomies across SharePoint 2010 Site Collections.

A summary of the main areas covered in the article:

- The Service Application
- Web Services (containing methods mainly reserved for future use at this point)
- Information about the two Managed Metadata Field Types (TaxonomyFieldType and TaxonomyFieldTypeMulti)
- The Features require for Managed Metadata to work including scope and visibility information, as well as a description of the purpose of each feature
- Site Columns added by the TaxonomyFieldAdded Feature
- Information about the hidden list created by the TaxonomyFieldAdded Feature and it's purpose in regards to taxonomies
- The SPList columns included when Managed Metadata is used in lists and libraries
- Event Receivers attached to a list or library when Managed Metadata is used.
